Overcoming “No”

Whether you are just starting out in the workplace or have been working for years, at some point you will hear the word “no” directed towards you. Being told “no” can throw you off and be quite discouraging. After all, rejection or the perception of being rejected can be a huge blow to our confidence. It's easy to fall into the trap and start thinking “I’m not good enough” or other negative thoughts. I encourage you to shift your view, change the meaning that you associate with the word. Now, this does take practice, but it's about empowering yourself and not giving your power away. Career acceleration requires the ability to adapt, to be flexible and at times take a different route to get to your ultimate destination.

Using “No” as a BuilderBuilds courage. Once you experience the feelings associated with hearing the word “no” - there is nowhere to go but forward. Stay committed and examine other ways that you can pursue your goals. Take whatever lessons you can from the experience and keep it moving.

Reminds you of your strengths. Think about the obstacles that you have overcome to get to where you are today. What skills, supports system did you tap into to keep you on track? View challenges as a way to build on your strengths. Don't allow “no” to make you discount what you bring to the table.

Challenges you to engage in continuous improvement. It is a reality, you will receive critical feedback at some point in your career. Some individuals may be much harsher than others, but when the deliverer takes the time to share constructive ways in which you can improve, view it as a gift. Incorporate what you can into your personal and professional development plan.

Forces you to not get too comfortable. Absence of "no" in your career is not realistic. If everyone is telling you “yes”, you need to expand your network. It means you a playing below the radar and not pushing yourself. Are you missing out on opportunities because you don't want to hear “no”?
