7 Career Success Lessons From My Journey

I have learned many powerful lessons on my professional journey. Below are a few of the gems I picked up as I worked (and still working) to shift out of my comfort zone and take action to create career and personal fulfillment and success. I hope they serve as a catalyst as you navigate your own career path and take steps to enrich your personal life.

  1. Don’t expect anyone else to manage your career. You follow the path, you get your education and then you enter the workforce. The manual does not state how you should proceed from there. I have learned that it is not your supervisor, manager, mother, father, siblings etc. job to manage your career. It is up to you to gain a deeper understanding of yourself and seek out opportunities. If you wait to be discovered, you will be waiting a long time - shift from passive to proactive.

  2. Get the support you need. A supportive base goes a long way in helping you to become the person you want to be and accelerate your career. Invest in yourself, seek ways to expand and strengthen your network to reach your full potential. Get your own personal board of directors to provide guidance, accountability, truth-telling and serve as a sounding board.

  3. Don’t spend too much time worrying about what others think. This is an area in which I’ve had my greatest tests, the more time you spend worrying about the opinion of others, the more you will be stuck. I have learned that in order to move ahead, I had to shift from worrying and focus on the possibilities. You can’t please everyone, so don’t waste your time trying.

  4. Put action to your dreams and you will see meaningful results. The dream is one part of the equation, action is the other. Take time to craft a plan and put action to the plan to move from dream to reality.

  5. Don’t overstay your welcome, learn when it is time to say bye-bye. Sometimes it seems easier to stay put because you already know what you have or you are scared to make a move because you are focusing on the ‘what ifs’ that may occur. Listen to your intuition. You will know that it is time to wave bye-bye when staying causes more harm –mental and physical – than good.

  6. Playing small serves no benefit and can lead to resentment. You have what it takes, however, you don’t believe in your own potential or you are scared to tap into your potential. The world needs what you have to offer – stop selling yourself short, value your unique skills and experiences and step out and shine.

  7. Give yourself permission. Stop waiting for things to align perfectly or for you to have the right answers. Give yourself permission to take action to advance to the next level. You will be glad that you did.
